Powder Metallurgy
Powder metallurgy is a process technology that uses metal powder or a mixture of metal powder and non-metal powder as raw materials to manufacture metal materials, composite materials and various types of products through processes such as molding and sintering. It first batches and mixes the raw material powder, and then forms the powder into a compact with a certain shape and size through methods such as pressing, injection molding, and isostatic pressing. Next, the compact is sintered in an appropriate atmosphere and temperature to allow metallurgical bonding between the powder particles to obtain products with certain strength and performance. The process steps of powder metallurgy usually include:
1. Pulverizing: Turning raw materials into powder, commonly used powdering methods including oxide reduction method and mechanical method.
2. Mixing: Mixing various required powders in a certain proportion, and homogenize it to make green powder. There are three types: dry, semi-dry and wet.
3. Forming: Put the evenly mixed mixture into a stamper and press it into a parison with a certain shape, size and density. It is basically divided into pressure molding and pressureless molding. The most widely used method of pressure molding is compression molding.
4. Sintering: It is a key process in the powder metallurgy process. The formed compact is then sintered to obtain the required final physical and mechanical properties, it is divided into unit sintering and multi-element sintering. In addition to ordinary sintering, there are also special sintering processes such as loose sintering, immersion method, and hot pressing method.
5. Post-processing: According to different product requirements, various methods can be adopted, such as finishing, oil immersion, machining, heat treatment and electroplating.
The dimensional accuracy of products produced by traditional powder metallurgy pressing and sintering processes can reach about ±0.1mm - ±0.3mm, using the powder injection molding (PIM) process, product accuracy can be significantly improved, and the general dimensional accuracy can reach about ±0.05mm.
